Copyright Management for Scholarship

The website 'Copyright Management for Scholarship' deals with copyright ownership in higher education, university policy on copyright and arrangements between universities, authors and publishers.

The site has been made by the Zwolle Group, on Copyright Management in Higher Education, a group with representatives of the principal stakeholders: authors, publishers, librarians, and universities. The aim of the group: to consider balanced approaches to the management of rights to achieve optimal access to scholarly information. The cooperation of all stakeholders as equal partners makes the Zwolle initiative unique.

The site has been developed to support the Zwolle conferences on Copyright and Universities – organised in 2001, 2002 and 2004 - and as a tool for disseminating their results. The Zwolle Group was formed to ensure follow-up to the innovations and enthusiasm that emerged from the conferences.

One of the results of the conferences are the Zwolle Principles. Among the others are a Copyright Toolbox for publisher-author agreements, guidelines for implementation of the Principles, models of University Copyright Policies and a Comparative Analysis of international Copyright Law applicable to University Scholarship.

This website, the Zwolle Group and the Zwolle conferences, have been made possible by the Dutch SURF Foundation, the joint organisation in the field of network services and information and communication technology (ICT) for institutions for higher education and research, together with JISC (Joint Information Systems Commitee), who supports further and higher education in the use of Information and Communications Technology (ICT) in the UK.

The Zwolle Group had its last meeting in May, 2006; the Zwolle project has now completed. This means the current website will no longer be updated. The last additions and revisions were made in July 2006. The Zwolle Group hopes the site will continue to be a useful tool and have a function in disseminating the results of the Zwolle initiative, as a reference tool for stakeholders.
