The second Zwolle Conference was able to take forward the process
of reaching agreement between the various parties involved in 'Copyright
and Universities' into a statement of principles now known as the
'Zwolle Principles'. The Objective of the Principles is 'to assist stakeholders - including authors, publishers, librarians, universities and the public - to achieve maximum access to scholarship without compromising quality or academic freedom and without denying aspects of costs and rewards involved'.
The document 'Copyright Policies and Agreements: implementing the
Zwolle Principles' tries to give a start to the implementation.
It lists words and phrases from several university copyright policies
and several agreements between publishers and authors.
Many of the policies and agreements listed in this document were
in place before the Zwolle Principles were agreed but they illustrate
the approach to copyright embodied in the Principles. These examples
have been compiled in order to assist universities, authors and
publishers in drafting policies and agreements governing the relationship
between the various stakeholders in good copyright management.
The document was prepared for SURF and the Zwolle Group by Frederick
J. Friend ucylfjf@ucl.ac.uk.
